Saint Wulstan, a Bishop of Worcester in the twelfth century, had a remarkable life. We celebrate him in the Archdiocese of Birmingham because he had such an impact on The Church in these parts.
A highly intelligent, athletic, good looking man - I'm sure you can guess the temptations he faced! How did he cope (geddit)?

What about Church doctrine and practice?
The Church has a similar attitude towards discerning the right thing to do: LISTEN TO THE FAITHFUL!!!
The Church teaches that all the faithful, through baptism, "have an instinct for the truth of the Gospel, which enables them to recognise and endorse authentic Christian doctrine and practice, and to reject what is false. That supernatural instinct, intrinsically linked to the gift of faith received in the communion of the Church, is called the sensus fidei"
(International Theological Commission 'Sensus fide in the life of the Church' 2014)
Today's gospel is an example of 'sensus fidei' in action; the forthcoming Synod on the Family will likewise be guided, through the Holy Spirit, mindful of the 'sensus fidei'......

The situation we face in the Church is somewhat similar to what happened in Judaism 600 years before The Epiphany - the reading from Isaiah holds some surprising signposts as to what the Church might be inspired to change........
