2,000 years ago, asking the opinion of a scribe or a pharisee about the law was a bit like asking one of today's lawyers for advice. You’ll get the letter of the law, but don’t be surprised if their advice is joyless and unhelpful.
On the other hand, people delight at what Jesus says. It's a fresh interpretation of the law. [Pope Francis seems to be following that example.....]

Don't rush into rejecting the evidence.....

We need to be gently nurtured in our faith over time, otherwise there's a danger of outright rejection of the evidence and a refusal to listen to reason. This is a very big problem in a society that, ironically, considers itself evidence-based, rational and "scientific". Other features of modern life - frenzied activity and a limited attention span - means people think they haven't got time to pause and ponder what is really going on.
People don't change..... when Jesus walked on the water the disciples couldn't believe their eyes. "Their eyes were closed." This is not all that surprising really - when we see something that contradicts our basic, firmly-held beliefs or our understanding of how the world works, we rationalise. It's called 'cognitive dissonance'. It protects us from getting over-stressed.
